That Cy was feeling so strongly then is very relevant to other themes that the show has attempted to get across, such as one of the big ones I mentioned earlier. The murder strikes home exactly how ashamed and impotent Cy was feeling over his inability to act and sacrifice his own life to take Hearst's (certainly it was in his head that another whore we know and love had the balls to make such an attempt, but I don't feel this had any impact on his decision not to kill "Stupid"). You'll notice he didn't kill the whore, despite threatening her (as he was in one of those moods), because she was not a mirror for Cy in the same way. So when he kills Leon, he's in a sense venting his frustration by killing his own weakness and his own flaws. When Cy is looking at Leon in those final moments, he's seeing a spineless, pathetic individual - but he's clearly able to understand the connection between Leon and himself. So Leon, a slave to opium (seen as a personal flaw and weakness rather than a disease in those times), is in a sense a mirror of Cy, and Tolliver makes this connection. It's also important to mention that Leon has been Cy's 100% complete and utter bitch, much like Cy was for Hearst & co. So what's tormenting Cy as he hangs out with Leon in that instant is that he feels weak, disgusted with himself and his inability to act. It's fascinating that David Milch wanted to make the point that even this man feels invested in the well-being of Deadwood (not that it's his sole motivation, there's obviously other, personal factors at play here).Īnyway, that's just a brief aside. Cy has always been portrayed as one of the most genuinely evil characters - his malice and hatred is something that exists outside of his current situation, as opposed to other characters who do bad things in order, for the most part, to meet an end. One of the primary themes of the show is looking at how societies are built, and how each member, regardless of their faults, contributes to the social structure and success. This in and of itself is quite remarkable and of heavy thematic importance. I forget exactly what Cy is going on about, but the gist of it is that he wants to kill Hearst - he has his gun, he knows he would die for it, but he strongly has that desire (something along the lines of "going to hell together"). If I recall, this happens as Cy is hanging on the balcony with Leon watching Hearst, victorious, leaving town. It's been quite some time for me, but I shouldn't have made such a comment without offering an explanation included. They didn't deserve another season after that shit show. I would have gladly seen Trixie die in her place. I liked the thing between Jen and Johnny. When Trixie hid after shooting Hearst, knowing that Al would kill another girl to pass off as her, I was disgusted. Jane bitches constantly too, which is also annoying, but at least she's not unbelievably self-righteous about it like Trixie. She even bullied Ellsworth into marrying Mrs. She bitches out everyone, often unprovoked, despite having no actual power. Trixie, true to form, acts like a loopy cunt and never suffers the consequences. Moreover, I didn't like Jack's effect on Al - he became too light-hearted around Jack, and it didn't suit Al's character.Ĥ) I hated the ending. I also never really understood his connection to those two women. We get glimpses into the group dynamic but it's never really explained. The Theatre folks never actually got the theatre up and running (aside from the amateur night). Joanie Stubbs is similarly aimless the writers kept pushing her relationship with Jane, but I really didn't care, and she does basically nothing else.ģ) The new characters were mostly a distraction. Cy Toliver, once a powerful force in the camp, does basically nothing but whine. Maybe my background knowledge isn't a fault with the show, but when you pick someone famous who clearly goes on to live it kills a lot of the suspense.Ģ) There were too many old characters hanging around without any clear purpose. Here's why I didn't like it:ġ) I knew Hearst wouldn't die. Season 1 is awesome, season 2 is OK, and season 3 is still terrible the second time around.
